What is Five Creeks Studio, Exactly?
We are a resource for children and families pursuing an education outside of traditional schools and education systems. Homeschooling is the mechanism that allows our members to pursue an education that is flexible around their needs, guided by their own interests, and achieved through direct, project-based experience.
Where are you located?
Currently we divide our time between a farm in West Berkeley and a large, wooded park in North Berkeley. Both are accessible by public transit. We are actively seeking dedicated program space near Central Berkeley that we can grow into over the next five years.
What are the Program Costs?
Costs vary depending on the hours and number of days enrolled. Please see our membership page for more details.
Is Five Creeks Studio a good Fit for My Gifted Child/ child with Special Needs?
Whether Five Creeks is a good fit for any family depends a lot on your particular circumstances, needs, and goals. In our experience, our programs work best for families and caregivers who are comfortable with learning that ebbs and flows around the interests of the children, and for children who are willing to take part in planning and directing their own learning, and can work without direct instruction or supervision. If you've read over our website and believe your child would thrive in our program, please get in touch. We'll set up a time for you and your child to spend a day with us.
Will My Child Be the Youngest/Oldest/Only child of Her Age?
Maybe. We understand the concern, especially since we've all grown accustom to schooling that takes place alongside age peers. However, we believe that mixed-age learning environments offer huge benefits and opportunities for social, emotional, and academic growth. Yes, even if your child happens to be the youngest, oldest, or only one of his age! Here is a wonderful article about the value of mixed-age play, by author Peter Gray.
